1996 Journal Archives Sunday, May 26, 1996 Day 15 Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming Today's Miles: 0 Cumulative Miles for the Tour: 951 Degree of Difficulty: Rest Day Terrain: Yellowstone National Park Find of the Day: The Park There is no way to explain the majesty and mystery of a place like Yellowstone. Uninhibited wild animals with a backdrop of waterfalls, open meadows and snow covered mountain peaks are seldom seen anywhere in the world but are consolidated into one landscape in Yellowstone. Field of Buffalo at Yellowstone The wildlife appears tame, but we have been warned numerous times that they ARE wild and may attack or charge with no provocation. The elk and bison are so plentiful, we see herds several times a day. Antelopes, moose, mule deer and eagles aren't as visible, but we've at least gotten a glimpse of each. Coyote roam through the canyons. Last night as we were getting into our tents, a pack started howling during a chase about 1/2 mile across the river. It was pretty obvious when they got their prey as howling turned to screeches which turned to silence. When Yellowstone was first discovered by American settlers in the 1800's, they went back to the east coast to tell of what they had seen and were called liars. No one had ever heard of such a thing as boiling water coming directly out of the earth, landscapes with pastels of color going on for miles or mineral deposits so high you had to have a 100 foot ladder to get to the top. Yellowstone Falls one and a half miles away Yellowstone is a landscape to itself. No amount of description can give you the essence of what is here..you'll have to come and see for yourself. ...and that's all I have to say about that... Bike America Tours |
